Golf is unlike other ball sports, does not have a standard playing field. This is why it is vital to be able to cope with different terrains and play on different courses. The most common course is 18 holes or nine holes on a course. Every hole has a cup that holds the ball. Every hole in a course is a teeing surface to start from, and an putting green with the cup. There are a variety of standard types of terrain that lie between the tee and green, including the fairway, rough (tall grass) as well as various hazards such as water, rocks or bunkers filled with sand. Each hole on the course of golf is unique. It can be played in match play or stroke play. Stroke play is the most commonly seen format at all levels, but especially at the highest level.
