Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started to become interested in acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized it was not the right location for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try she applied for and was awarded a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she already had made her debut on television in an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
